Valve's Steam Frame shipped an official ARM build of SteamOS. Within days, two community projects put that userspace on Android handhelds. SteamOS-ARM-SM8550 v1.1 (September 27) is tested on the AYN Odin 2. SteamOS ARM for Handhelds v1.2.1 (September 27) targets the KONKR Pocket FIT G3 Gen 3 and adds initial AYANEO Pocket S2 / S2 Pro support (Retro Handhelds, Sept 25, Retro Handhelds, Sept 27).

Both reuse Steam Frame userspace (Game Mode + KDE desktop) and a ROCKNIX-family kernel. Valve's Frame kernel is Frame-only, so these images are not a one-click Valve installer (Armada statement via RH).
The FIT/S2 image is the one that moved fastest: v1.2 added native ARM Lossless Scaling frame gen (lsfg-vk 2.0), an Easy UFS installer that keeps Android, in-place SteamOS Update, and Play Store via Valve's Lepton layer. v1.2.1 hotfixes games that flickered below 1080p (project README).
Buy the hardware that matches the port
KONKR Pocket FIT G3 is the only SM8650 handheld the FIT image maintainer has tested. AYANEO's store on September 28 listed 12GB/256GB at $429, 16GB/512GB at $479, and 16GB/1TB at $529. 8GB/128GB is listed at $369 and was sold out on the product page (AYANEO Shopify). The ~$239 Indiegogo number in older coverage is dead.
AYANEO Pocket S2 shares the G3 Gen 3 chip and is now in our catalog from AYANEO's spec page: 6.3-inch 2560x1440 IPS, Adreno A33, 8,000mAh (S2) / 10,000mAh (S2 Pro), Android 14. Store price today is $439 for 8GB/128GB (compare-at $499) and $499 for 12GB/256GB (AYANEO specs, store). SteamOS support is initial; pick "AYANEO Pocket S2" in ABL even on the Pro. The maintainer has not booted one.
AYN Odin 2 is the SM8550 reference. Pocket 6, Thor, and several AYANEO SM8550 devices are listed with weaker testing. Odin 3 is Snapdragon 8 Elite / SM8750: RH still described Holodor as having no downloadable image on September 25. Use Armada there, not these Frame ports.

How this differs from Armada and ROCKNIX Steam
We already covered ROCKNIX putting Steam into ES-DE on Qualcomm handhelds in April (ROCKNIX Steam mode). Armada is a Fedora bootc SteamOS-like distro that said Frame userspace does not unlock new performance versus Armada, and it is not changing course (RH, Armada repo).
Pick these Frame ports if you want Game Mode that looks like a Deck and you accept community kernels. Pick Armada if you want an immutable Fedora image and dual-screen work. Pick stock Android if you bought the handheld for emulation frontends.
Flashing ABL and writing an image can brick a device if you pick the wrong SoC. Read the project README for your chip; we are not republishing flash scripts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run SteamOS on an Android handheld right now?
Yes on community images, not as a Valve SKU. Odin 2 has a tested SM8550 image. Pocket FIT G3 has a tested SM8650 image. Pocket S2 support landed in v1.2 but is untested by the maintainer. All of them need ROCKNIX ABL first (SM8550, SteamOS ARM for Handhelds).
Is this official Valve SteamOS?
The userspace is Valve's Steam Frame ARM SteamOS. The kernel, ABL, and device trees are community code. Valve does not sell or support these handhelds as SteamOS devices. Frame's own kernel does not boot non-Frame hardware.
Do I have to wipe Android?
No for a first run. Both projects boot Linux from a 32GB+ microSD after ABL is flashed; Android remains selectable in the ABL menu. The FIT/S2 Easy UFS Installer can move Linux internal and says that erases Android user data while leaving Android itself (README).
Does SteamOS ARM work on the AYN Odin 3?
Not in these two repos. Odin 3 is SM8750 / Snapdragon 8 Elite. Retro Handhelds said Holodor had no downloadable image as of September 25, 2026. Armada lists Odin 3 as untested, install-at-your-own-risk.
Should I buy a Pocket FIT or Pocket S2 for SteamOS?
Buy FIT G3 if you want the only SM8650 handheld the v1.2 maintainer has tested, at $429 for 12GB/256GB. Buy Pocket S2 if you want the 6.3-inch 2K panel at $439 and will accept untested SteamOS support. Neither replaces a Steam Deck OLED for Proton compatibility.
